Gary Winkler was inducted into the Kansas Credit Union Association’s Hall of Fame at the Association’s 2013 annual meeting and convention in Topeka, KS last Saturday. The award honors leaders for their dedication and passion as a leader, advocate and mentor in the Kansas credit union movement.
Winkler is known as a great mentor and role model. His credit union career started in 1959 at the Kansas Highway Credit Union (formerly Kansas Credit Union, Credit Union 1 and now Quest Credit Union).
During his tenure, Winkler was instrumental in adding new services and reaching out to expand the credit union’s field of membership. When the credit union went through a merger, he provided a unique solution by creating a joint president position. In 1992, Winkler was honored as the KCUA Professional of the Year. He retired in June 2000 after seeing the credit union through Y2K.
Winkler served in many board and leadership positions in the credit union movement including the Kansas Credit Union Association board from 1978-1984 and 1987-2001, and the boards of League Service Corporation, Kansas Corporate Credit Union and the Capitol Chapter of Credit Unions.
