Industry Leaders Honored at KCUA Annual Meeting

"The power of one can make a difference” was the theme for the 2013 Kansas Credit Union Association’s Annual Meeting & Convention held in Topeka last weekend. KCUA celebrated 78 years of service, as well as honored five leaders for the contributions to the credit union movement.

"We are proud of the contributions our credit unions make to their communities every day and our theme was a way to illustrate the people helping people philosophy,” said Marla Marsh, President/CEO of KCUA. "One person can make a difference, but it’s the collaboration and cooperative spirit of many that has changed the financial lives of millions of credit union members.”

Governor Sam Brownback attended the Governmental Affairs Luncheon on Saturday and addressed questions from credit union staff and volunteers. Other notable speakers included Lieutenant Colonel Rob Darling who recounted his first-hand experience witnessing crisis leadership in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks, and John Tippets who shared an inspirational story of survival in Alaska.

Four credit union leaders were honored at the event:

HENRY PETERSON PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
Karen Hamit, CEO of Credit Union of Dodge City (Dodge City, KS), received the Henry Peterson Professional of the Year Award, honoring her leadership within the Kansas credit union community.

JOHN MICHENER VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Jim Peebler, Supervisory Committee Chair for TECU Credit Union (Wichita, KS) received the John Michener Volunteer of the Year award for his contribution and devotion as a volunteer, both to credit unions and the greater community.

KCUA HALL OF FAME

Gary Winkler, Quest Credit Union, (Topeka, KS) was recognized for his dedication and passion as a leader, advocate and mentor in the Kansas credit union movement.
 
POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT AWARD
Jane Hammil, Credit Union of America, (Wichita, KS) received the Political Involvement Award, recognizing her extraordinary effort and involvement in educating both state and national policymakers on the credit union difference.

At the Association’s business meeting, Don Homan, Frontier Community Credit Union, was elected to the Volunteer Seat on the KCUA Board of Directors.

  • Vice Chair: Don Homan, Frontier Community Credit Union, Leavenworth
  • Secretary/Treasurer: Vickie Hurt, President of Quest Credit Union, Topeka

  • Denise Bonner, Manager of Wakarusa Valley Credit Union, Lawrence
  • Larry Damm, President/CEO of Cessna Employees Credit Union, Wichita
  • Rosa Saenz, Senior Vice President of Golden Plains Credit Union, Garden City
  • Garth Strand, President/CEO of Hutchinson Credit Union, Hutchinson

Shared Financial Solutions continuing their terms include:
