To illustrate the credit union philosophy of people helping people, some Kansas credit unions gave away $15,500, $25 at a time.
Unsuspecting residents in Emporia, Ark City, Winfield, Wamego, Topeka and Wichita were surprised with $25 in cash, gift cards or free gas.
Open to any affiliated Kansas credit union who contributed to the voluntary MP3 Statewide Advertising fund, the event was kept a secret to instill the element of surprise. Skip down to event media coverage.
At each of the six locations, the first 100 people (120 at the Emporia location) who came to the designated gas station received $25, gift card or free gas. Each location was responsible for coordinating their own volunteers and scheduling the time of the event that worked best for the gas station.
During the event, some of the consumers then posted to Twitter and Facebook about the free gas.
Kansas State University Federal Credit Union reported that someone gave back the $25 and asked that it be given to someone in uniform.
Emporia State Federal Credit Union received a thank you card in the mail, and an email from another financial institution applauding the credit union’s efforts.

You just made my day!
You guys are nice people.
This is so nice, I am just so tickled.
This is exciting.
Wow, that doesn’t happen every day!
Oh my gosh, my lucky day!
I’m going to have to go put more money in my account at the credit union!
