The weather was in our favor for the 2014 Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 11.

More than 130 credit union staff and volunteers from 28  credit unions in Kansas met at the newly renovated Capitol, and were welcomed by KCUA’s President/CEO Marla Marsh and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback.

Senator Rob Olsen, Chairman of the Senate Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, and Representative Pete DeGraaf, Chairman of the House Financial Institutions Committee also welcomed the group before credit union representatives met with their legislators.

Attendees stressed the credit union difference and the important role that credit unions play in the Kansas economy.

They shared with legislators that Kansas credit unions are healthy and well capitalized and continue to lend and serve their members, despite the increasing compliance and regulatory burdens.

Credit unions also discussed our support of efforts to protect businesses from bad faith assertions of patent infringement, which can burden small and medium sized organizations like credit unions. Other top issues discussed included:

  • Financial literacy
  • Mortgage registration fees
  • Support of a strong state charter option

In between appointments, some credit union folks took advantage of the free Capitol tour to see all the new renovations.

Before the evening legislative reception, House Speaker Ray Merrick and Assistant Minority Leader Tom Burroughs were on hand to speak at the Legislative Leadership Panel. Credit unions also heard from Jeff Russell, Director of Legislative Administrative Services.
