SCAM alert: Credit Union Card Deactivated

The Kansas Credit Union Association has been notified about text messages regarding credit union issued cards. The message has been very generic. The text message reads as follows:

"THE CREDIT UNION CENTER ALERT: Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED. Please call 316 765-0489."
Here is what we know:

  • The message came from (918) 527-762 (There was NO last number digit)
  • When you call the 316 number, there is a recording that says either "The mailbox is full. Please try your call again later,” or asks you to leave your name and number for a return call.
  • The 316 number is forwarded from another number that has been set up.

This particular message fits the pattern for text phishing to try to get credit union members or other financial institution customers to reveal personal information.

As always, the Kansas Credit Union Association advises consumers NOT to give out any personal information over the phone. Consumers are encouraged to call their credit union or financial institutions customer service number.
