About Hiking the Hill:

Hiking the Hill is a powerful grassroots tool that provides credit unions with the opportunity to visit Washington to educate decision makers on credit union issues. When credit unions participate in a Hike the Hill, they demonstrate that credit union support has a real face, real concerns, and real stories of how credit unions affect the lives of Kansans.

Hike the Hill is a grassroots program sponsored by CUNA and the Kansas Credit Union Association to provide credit unions with the opportunity to visit Washington to educate decision makers on credit union issues. KCUA schedules at least one Hike the Hill event annually for Kansas Credit Unions. In some years, legislative events necessitate additional trips.

Hike the Hill events are short trips—typically only one night—to Washington DC. During the Hike, KCUA coordinates opportunities for credit unions to learn about the issues impacting credit unions and putting attendees in touch with the policy makers on both the legislative and regulatory sides.

A typical Hike the Hill agenda will include the following items:

  • Congressional and Regulatory Briefing from KCUA and CUNA staff
  • Meetings with all members of the Kansas Congressional delegation
  • Meetings with regulatory agencies—could include NCUA, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or others

During these meetings with policy makers, we communicate the credit union difference, our concerns over the changing regulatory environment, and our position on current issues that impact credit unions. These issues have included raising the credit union member business lending cap, comprehensive housing finance report, cybersecurity, financial institution exam fairness, and ATM fee disclosures. We encourage you to consider participating in a Hike the Hill.
